Entertainment Industry in Malaysia

Why Entertainment industry (esp. focusing on Clubs, Discos, Karaoke Lounges, Bars, and Pubs etc)? What for? To whom? Its advantages and its disadvantages?

My mind always strikes on head that is it really important to have clubs, discos, bars, pubs etc. I don’t have any choice. I should look from “You” point of view. Some would say it is important and someone would say it is rather disgusting.

For e.g. you can surf cyberspace to examine stock markets, to have a fairly good grasp of capital transfers, of businesses plunging and surging, of investment opportunities and profit possibilities. And trafficking of women and children is one big business. It is said that pornography is one of the global profit-making industries, and that the budget for the so-called “entertainment” industry in Japan is equivalent to the military budget. Not so surprising if you realize the fact that “entertainment” in the name of R&R and militarism go together. This is another aspect of globalization. If we ban all the clubs, discos, bars, pubs etc, what would be the economy of the country as the majority of the government income source is from these sorts of things. Can the country progress in the ahead of development without this? We don’t need to go far. You can take the examples of fast progressing and developed countries.

Everyone in the world has the freedom to live and no one has the right to interfere in anybody’s life. People can have lot of funs, pleasure and most of them can’t ignore they are benefited from these source of entertainment to one way or another.

But it does have lot of disadvantages too. Aren’t we encouraging prostitution in the name of these sorts of entertainment? Aren’t we creating chaos in the society? Aren’t we forgetting our valuable cultures, norms and traditions? Aren’t we exploiting the women and the laws of the Women fundamentals?

Every aspect has the positive and negative aspects but the thing is that how you look at them. It’s your choice to support or reject it. How do you look at it?

As Malaysia is a Muslim country, the Authorities enforce a 3 am closure ruling for nightspots in Kuala Lumpur city areas, while clubs and pubs in urban areas in the surrounding area of residential estates have to close at 1 am. Occasionally, the police will conduct raids on random places to check for illegal drugs, prostitution and other vices of society. Sometimes, the severity of raids can affect the reputation and business of a club, causing it an early downfall. Many nightspots have a short lifespan of a few years, as the clubbing crowd of Kuala Lumpurcan be influenced quickly by the advanced and newer establishments; effectively bankrupting the old ones. But there are some that have stayed and preserved, notably in established areas such as Bangsar and Hartamas. Besides these, Malaysian society is deeply rooted by culture. It cannot digest these sorts of activities. Use of maximum alcoholic beverages and exploitation of women in the name of the bars, clubs, discos, etc is considered bad in the Malaysian context.So, these sorts of entertainment industry should have to compete in highly risky environment which is more competitive too.Is it good for a Muslim country like Malaysia to encourage these sorts of activities? Now we are in the 21^st century world. Should this issue be considered as bad or this industry should be encouraged to uplift the economy of the country?

Nightlife and Entertainment

When we talk about Nightlife and Entertainment, our mind revolves on Clubs, Discos, Cinemas, Karaoke Lounges, Bars, and Pubs etc. For e.g. Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia is often regarded as the ‘city that never sleeps’. This is because of its active and vibrant nightlife. The numerous nightclubs, bars and pubs are a pointer to the colorful nightlife in Kuala Lumpur. The city of Kuala Lumpur is filled with a large number of nightclubs, bars and pubs, which comes to life as the sun sets in the evening. People of all age groups, ranging from the youth to the middle aged, everybody throng these places to have fun and get entertained. As KL comes alive in a blaze of multi-colored lights when the night falls, there is always something to keep you entertained with the profusion of lively karaoke lounges, pubs with live bands and jazz, discos, cinemas and Cineplex’s showing contemporary English, Malay, Chinese, Hindi and Indonesian movies, theatres, night clubs, cabarets, bowling alleys etc. Local theatre groups regularly figures out the Asian and Western dramas, dance dramas and the bangsawan (traditional Malay opera).

At dusk, Malaysia reveals a new facet. Hotel lounges and clubs, frequently found within the larger hotels, are active at night. Although somewhat expensive, these clubs usually have entertainment on a nightly basis, excluding Sunday. Performances and styles range from jazz to piano acts and popular music.

Locating pubs and bars may require some effort as these are usually situated in the suburbs where live-music is often played. Pubs close around 11pm, however, so late-night action seekers must look elsewhere. Discos begin to warm up just as the pubs start closing their doors and often stay open until 2am. Some have live bands and light shows but often require cover charges or drink minimums. Nightclubs and cabarets, or “kelab malam” as the locals call them, offer fifties-style atmosphere, often with variety acts, floor shows and bands. To name a few of the places of KL, Jalan Bukit Bintang meaning Starhill Road, Jalan Imbi, Jalan Ampang, Bangsar are the great places for nightlife options.

Entertainment is a part of our life. It makes us happy and gives one kind of pleasure. We gain entertainment from various sources such as video game, television, films, night club, discos, pubs, bars, sports, music and so on. Entertainment is an event, performance, or activtiy designed to give pleasure or relaxation to an audience.But here, I have narrowed down the topics matter and I am going to talk about “ Nightlife and Entertainment” in Malaysia, esp. in capital and some parts of the country which are mostly affected by night clubs, discos, pubs, bars etc.

The entertainment industry (much of which is informally known as show business or show biz) conists of a large number of sub-industries devoted to entertainment (www.wikipedia.com). So,This industry is dedicated to provide information besides giving information and entertainment. Traditional live industry includes dance, drama, musical theatre,magic, comedy, concerts, theater,music industry. The publishing industry includes authors, jouranlists, publishers.Exbiition entertainment includes museum, trade show, fair etc. The present-day entertainment industry includes film,broadcastng,record industry, theme parks, discotheques etc. and I am talking about entertainment industry that involves night clubs,discotheques,pubs,bars,etc. Are they really needed in today’s present world as a source of entertainment?

Is it good to have such things as a source of entertainment? Or is it very bad in the context of Malaysian culture? Can we digest this modern culture? Or should it be eradicated from the society? How does it affect in the political, economical, socio-cultural and legal aspects of the country? Should be encouraged or discouraged? What are our young generation demands? Is it a social evil? Or is it important for our life? It depends on you because we have alternatives in life and choosing the best alternative in life would value worth in business, and in every field of life.
